The last person to walk on another planetary body was Eugene Cernan in December 1972 as part of Apollo 17. With the Cold War long over what will make us go to Mars and who will go? Will there be a new breed of astronaut? And how different will they be from the Apollo heroes? Programme three in Destination Mars looks how and when will get to Mars and investigates the new technology which lets astronauts get to Mars faster, grow there own food and recycle almost all their waste. We meet the Human Mars Mission planners and the scientists who will be sending rovers and landers there in the next few years. By finding out more about Mars they hope to be able to decide whether Mars could some day be our second home.
